Outdoor Gym Opens At Clovelly

By Marcus Braid on September 4, 2014 in News

A $70,000 outdoor gym has been opened in Burrows Park in Clovelly as Randwick Council moves to build outdoor exercise facilities along the coastline.

The facility is the second outdoor beachside gym to open recently following the popularity of the Maroubra outdoor gym, which was opened in 2013.

“We’ve obviously identified a program of outdoor gyms that we want to implement and Clovelly is one of them,” Randwick Mayor Scott Nash said.

“The outdoor gym in Burrows Park is the next one off the rank. Now we’re also proposing an outdoor gym in Kensington.

“What we’re trying to do is get them in different locations so everyone can experience the outdoor gyms for themselves, wherever they live.”

Council have plans to build more outdoor gyms at Kensington Park and Chifley Sports Reserve in this financial year’s budget.

“The idea of having an outdoor gym is obviously to provide a facility that’s been charged for everyone to use and outdoors as well,” Cr Nash said.

“Obviously a lot of people who use gyms go to the indoor gyms. Outdoor gyms take advantage of the great coastal environment that we enjoy that we have in the Eastern Suburbs.”

The Clovelly outdoor gym is suitable for use by all ages and features low-impact exercise equipment ideal for older people or those recovering from injuries. Both the Clovelly and Maroubra outdoor gyms are located along the Sydney Coastal Walkway, meaning people can incorporate a free gym workout into their walk or jog.
