Tell us about The Sweet Spot in a paragraph…
The Sweet Spot is a place where people come from far and wide to sample some of the finest cakes, pastries, homemade pies and soups in the Eastern Suburbs, along with the best coffee at The Spot.
How long has the shop been running for?
Approximately four and a half years, during which time we’ve won two Randwick Council business awards. I’ve been working here for three and a half of those years.
Who owns the business?
Peter and Angela Bozikis. They’re a bit media shy so they’ve thrown me in the spotlight. They are very proactive business owners who encourage their staff to run a tight ship. We call it ‘Team Sweet Spot’. Peter did his apprenticeship with Hellenic Bakery in Marrickville but decided he wanted to run his own business. Angela previously worked in public relations.
What were you doing before you started working at The Sweet Spot?
I spent over a decade working down at Coogee Beach looking after the locals and holidaymakers alike at Café Congo. I also helped run the art gallery laundrette at the north end of Coogee Beach.
Who came up with the name for the shop?
Peter and Angela of course! It’s pretty self-explanatory really. We sell sweet stuff and we’re at The Spot.
What’s the best thing about working at The Sweet Spot?
Working with fantastic people and a fantastic product that is always improving, and looking after the lovely supportive customers that come through our doors.
Does anything about The Sweet Spot piss you off?
Impatient people would probably be the only thing. You can’t rush a good coffee!
What’s your most popular product?
Our Japonaise – layers of hazelnut meringue and chocolate mousse dipped in dark chocolate ganache. In summer the ice cream cakes sell like hot cakes, pardon the pun.
What’s the medium- to long-term plan for the business?
We’re looking for another premises with a bigger kitchen to improve our product and expand our range. We won’t be leaving The Spot though. We’re here to stay!
Can Beast readers get a discount at The Sweet Spot?
If you mention The Beast I can guarantee you’ll get a big smile and sweets made with love! We’re already great value.
