Local Chick… Collette Reynolds From Waverley

Waverley resident Colette Reynolds is an Eastern Beaches local through and through. She shares her local favourites with The Beast…

How long have you lived here?
Ten years at my current address.

Have you always lived locally?
Yes! I grew up on Coogee Beach, then lived at Bondi Beach for fifteen years (the good old days), but I ‘moved south’ to Waverley/Bronte ten years ago.

What’s your favourite beach?
I simply love Bronte and swim there most days of the year. I also love to snorkel at Clovelly and Gordon’s Bay.

What’s your favourite eatery?
I like Salt at Clovelly for brekky or lunch in summer and Eugene’s on Macpherson Street for fresh salads for lunch at work. One of my absolute favourite places for dinner would have to be Gelbison in Lamrock Avenue, Bondi, where I have been going since Nick opened around twenty years ago.

Where do you like to have a drink?
Nowhere in particular, but I do like Cafe Q in Bronte for a glass of vino and I go to SumBar on Frenchmans Road sometimes.

Do you have a favourite sporting team?
Well my brother may never speak to me again if I don’t mention the Rabbitohs here.

What do you do for work?
I own and run The Bronte Sewing Room, where myself and five other fabteachers teach sewing and other related skills to the young and old and anyone in between.

What’s your favourite thing about your work?
I love a lot of things about my work but there is a great sense of community within the walls of The Bronte Sewing Room and I get to know a lot of fabulous people through my work. I have flexible-ish working hours too (just have to check in with me, the boss…) so I can spend time at the beach in the mornings staring at the sea, walking the beach and then swimming, which I love because I work hard. I am always grateful too that I don’t have to commute!

What music are you into at the moment?
Good music is a priority at work as it makes sewing and making things just that bit better. Listening to Triple J’s Like a Version 7 at the moment. I am also really loving an album called Femmes de Paris, which has some fab, well-known songs in French (e.g. These Boots are Made for Walking, Paint it Black, etc.). I also like Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings, and Eddie Vedder is never far away.

Who is your favourite person?
Hard question… I have amazing friends and family and I am inspired by so many people that I can’t pick just one. I do, however, love spending time talking and laughing with a friend of mine called Helen who is 94 years old. She is just fantastic.

What do you get up to on the weekends?
When I am not running weekend workshops at The Bronte Sewing Room I could be catching up with family and friends, whale watching on a rock somewhere for four months of the year, maybe reading, cooking, seeing films or plays, or sleeping.

Do you have a favourite quote?
An oldie but a goodie by Margaret Mead: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
