Bali Bombings – Ten Years On

October 12 this year will mark the ten-year anniversary of the horrific Bali bombings. 202 people lost their lives on that fateful night in 2002, 88 of them Australians. A number of those killed hailed from or were intrinsically linked to the Eastern Suburbs area.

Each year since the bombings a service has been held at the Bali memorial at Coogee’s Dolphins Point, which was named in honour of the six Coogee Dolphins A-grade rugby league players who lost their lives in Bali. This year will be no exception. Friends, fathers, mothers, siblings, work mates and teammates of those who lost their lives will be in attendance.

The ceremony will include speeches, songs and floral tributes to be laid at one of the memorials. The service is a chance to remember and pay respects to those innocent Australians who lost their lives to an act of merciless terrorism. With many locals still heading over to Bali for their holidays, it is a timely reminder of precious life is.

This year’s Bali Commemoration Ceremony, run by Randick City Council, will take place from 10.00am to 12noon at Dolphins Point, Dunningham Reserve, Coogee Beach. For more information visit www.randwick.nsw.gov.au.
