Bronte Photographer’s Stunning Transformation

Bronte photographer Andrew Goldie, who you may know as the chap who takes the delightful portraits that regularly grace the cover of The Beast, is holding an exhibition of his latest works titled ‘Transformation’ in Customs House at Circular Quay from the 14th of February through to the 31st of March.

Goldie spent two years using coastal locations from Watsons Bay to Botany Bay to create this stunning conceptual series.

“I was inspired by the transmission of our energies in and out of this world and the many unanswered questions surrounding such phenomena,” Goldie said, whilst talking about his surreal images.

Visually creating these pure and almost supernatural moments, the photographer often uses a recurring motif of a white floating sheet, which gracefully dances through harsh, rugged coastal landscapes. Goldie assigns the imagery to that “of the brief journey of a life energy morphing from one form to another”.

Recent fatherhood and the profound experience of witnessing the birth of a tiny human being – his son Elijah – have also influenced this series of captivating images. According to Goldie, it deals with “the wonderment about where do we come from and where does the human spirit go when it leaves this place”.

Given the rugged coastal locations that the photographer chose to focus upon, capturing the images was no walk in the park. A dedicated team of assistants was assigned to carrying well over 100kg of gear including cameras, lighting, booms, generators and computers. This was hauled up and down steep cliffs, into rock pools and deep into coastal bushland to help bring the photographer’s vision to life.

“No location was unattainable and I was prepared to experiment,” Goldie said. “Now that I think about it, I was lucky none of us was seriously injured as I love to work on the edge of cliffs and other risky places for some crazy reason.”
