Damning Report Inspires Free Fitness Sessions
Local fitness trainer Troy Stewart from East Side Crew is concerned about recent reports revealing that more than six million Australians suffer from liver disease, which is believed to be costing the economy around $50 billion a year.“One of the main causes of liver disease is poor diet and lack of exercise,” Troy said.
In an effort to give something back to the community, East Side Crew is offering locals a free group fitness session at Bronte Beach at 9:30am every Saturday morning for six weeks, beginning June 1, to help people get fit and lead a healthier lifestyle.
”I have been fortunate to be able to run fitness programs on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, but a lot of people find it hard to make time to train during the week due to heavy work commitments,” Troy said.
”Hopefully by offering free classes on a Saturday morning we get a good response from people serious about improving their fitness and their diet.”
Troy is hoping for the support of Waverley Council, as he feels it is an initiative the council can use to promote good health within its municipality.
”I’m sure the mayor and the councillors would be happy to see this sort of thing happening in their area, as opposed to the negative reaction they get for a lot of other issues.
”Who knows, maybe they will let the participants in the fitness program park for free!
”Better still, we might be able to convince of few of the councillors to come down and participate and see what these fitness classes are all about.
”We have been given a bit of grief in the past in relation to my so-called ‘boot camps’ on the beach, but really all we are doing is helping people feel better within themselves.”
According to recent articles in the Sydney Morning Herald, experts are predicting the liver disease problem to worsen among young patients in the next 10 to 15 years.
Doctors say they are seeing children as young as nine with the condition, which develops when there is so much fat in the liver that they can’t process it, the SMH report said.
The report also said that in the US fatty liver disease was predicted to become the leading cause of liver transplants in the next 20 years.
”These are frightening predictions, especially when they are concerning young children,” Troy said.
”Let’s hope the community can start taking their fitness and diet seriously and a good way to start is to come down to Bronte and take advantage of the free classes.”
