Grab A Seat At The Global Table

By Ellie Craven on March 8, 2011 in Food

For those unfamiliar with Harmony Week, it’s essentially seven days of celebrations marking the ideals of belonging and living together equally and peacefully. Often referred to as ‘World Interfaith Harmony Week’ this commemoration week will be celebrated in the Eastern Suburbs through the Waverley Council organised event, The Global Table.

The Global Table will be held in Oxford Street Mall, Bondi Junction, kicking off on Saturday, March 12 from 11am to 4pm, officially launching Harmony Week with the key message ‘Everyone belongs in Waverley’.

Now in its eighth year, The Global Table event is a fun day for young and old with amazing food and exotic entertainment from around the world and loads of activities planned throughout the day. The celebration will also be featuring an enormous 25-metre long communal dinning table to emphasise the theme of belonging and togetherness. Get along and bring your friends as there’s plenty of room for everyone!

The event is a unique way to encompass the celebration of food and music whilst also conveying an important message to the people of Waverley. Even kids can get involved as there will be lots of fun activities including cupcake and gingerbread-man decorating.

The Global Table will be rounding up flavours from all corners of the globe, featuring foods from Aotearoa, China, Ethiopia, South America, India, Japan, Lebanon, Mexico, Spain, Turkey and Venezuela, so this is your chance to experience cuisine you’ve never tasted before!

And if you have a sweet tooth you can indulge in delicious treats like gelato, pomme fritz and African coffee (which is the best way to end a perfect meal!).

Also, in conjunction with Harmony Week and The Global Table, the cafés and restaurants in Bondi Junction and surrounding areas will be offering some great meal deals, so if you love a cheap feed, keep your eyes peeled!

Waverley Mayor Sally Betts is certainly excited about this year’s festival.

“I’m looking forward to joining in this feast of senses – it’s a celebration of the diversity that is Waverley through food and music from around the world.” Mayor Betts said.

So get along to see Oxford Street Mall buzzing with the sights, sounds and scents of the most diverse cultures of the world. The incredible food and the extraordinary music from unique traditions will transform Bondi Junction into a kaleidoscope of colours and cultures.

If you’ve never been to a cultural celebration before this is the one to go to. It’s a feast for the senses. You will be amazed at the choice of food and entertainment, and you’ll certainly be rubbing your tummy at the end of the day!
