Garage Sal Trail Booming In Popularity

Bargain hunters around the Eastern Suburbs are setting their sights on some affordable new acquisitions as they gear up for the Garage Sale Trail this month.

The national event, now in its fourth year, has been a widespread success in connecting communities with their neighbours and stimulating local economies.

“As we know, one person’s trash is another person’s treasure,” Randwick Mayor Scott Nash said.

“The Garage Sale Trail is the ultimate ‘spring clean’ and the perfect opportunity for locals to clear their clutter.”

One hundred councils, including Randwick and Waverley, have thrown their support behind the event, which has seen 360,000 participants and 35,000 sellers getting involved. An online audience of 2.1 million has also keyed in to take part.

“You can ‘rehome’ unwanted items, and at the same time reduce the amount of waste going to landfill,” Mr Nash said.

“It’s also a good chance to connect with your community, and score a bargain.”

Since starting out as a small-scale event in Bondi, the Garage Sale Trail has continued to expand at a rapid rate. Last year’s event resulted in 1.5 million items listed for sale and over 230,000 new community connections were made, which is on average 13 new connections per participant.

The Garage Sale Trail is for buyers, sellers, makers and creators, with a particular focus on sustainability and commerce.
