On the Western Front at Christmas in 1914, a series of extraordinary events took place when soldiers from opposing sides spontaneously laid down their arms, exchanged gifts and sang Christmas carols. Known as the Christmas Truce, this momentary pause in hostilities was short lived as the respective commanding authorities, safely ensconced some 30 km behind the battle lines, ordered an immediate return to the slaughter.
