11 Tonnes of E-waste Collected by Randwick Council

By Dan Hutton on July 21, 2011 in News

Randwick residents dropped off nearly 11 tonnes of e-waste over a two-week period.

Randwick City residents handed in almost 11,000 kilograms of e-waste as part of Randwick City Council’s recent free collection day.

Randwick Mayor Murray Matson praised the local community for their recycling efforts, with residents dropping off 10,956kg or 833 items of e-waste.

“Randwick residents have diverted almost 11,000 kilograms of ewaste that could otherwise have ended in landfill. E-waste in landfill can leak hazardous substances into the ground and into groundwater.

“Despite having a 20 foot shipping container on hand for the disposal of e-waste, a second container was needed after the first one became full well ahead of schedule.

“The most common types of e-waste dropped off were televisions, computer monitors and hardware, microwaves and mobile phones,” said the Mayor.

Randwick City Council will hold another free e-waste collection next year. For more information on how to properly dispose of electronic waste, contact Guada Lado on 9665 9031 or email guada.lado@randwick.nsw.gov.au.
