Hungry Kids Of Hungary

By Dan Hutton on October 26, 2010 in

Brisbane four-piece Hungry Kids Of Hungary have just dropped their debut album, Escapades, and now they’ve set off on a national tour (including a stop off at the Beach Road Hotel on Wednesday, November 10) to promote the hell out of it. During the month The Beast caught up with Hungry Kids Of Hungary drummer Ryan Strathie…

First memory of music… That would have to be when I was about three years old, playing a tennis racket like a guitar to Dire Straits records. My father would join in on drums and we’d even wear headbands like Mark Knopfler!

First album you bought… It’s such a long time ago now but I still remember it like it was last week. It was Led Zeppelin’s “Houses Of The Holy” album on cassette. It’s still one of my favourite albums to this day.

Song that gives you goosebumps… A song from the above album, The Rain Song. It’s such a beautifully crafted piece of music with some amazing sounding mellotron strings and piano.

Fave driving album/s… Current albums that are in my car are The Kinks’ “The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society”, Midlake’s “Bamnan and Silvercork” and Dr. Dog’s “Shame,Shame”.

A Hungry Kids Of Hungary highlight… When we played The Viper Room in LA earlier in the year, So many great bands have played that venue over the years. I couldn’t quite believe how small the place actually was.

If you could pick a supergroup its members would be… It would consist mostly of artists from the ‘60s and ‘70s, dead and alive. John Bonham (Led Zeppelin) on drums, Burton Cummings (The Guess Who) on keys and vocals, Paul McCartney (The Beatles) on bass and vocals, Terry Reid on rhythm guitar and vocals, and Steve Miller (The Steve Miller Band) on lead guitar and vocals.

Sydney bands giving you the good tingles at the moment… Deep Sea Arcade is a great band. And of course Cloud Control. Their debut album is killer.

Fave Sydney venue… My favourite Sydney venue I’ve played so far would have to be the Enmore Theatre.

Band or genre that gives you an ice-cream headache… Ke$ha! I really can’t stomach her or her music. Benny our bassist also shares a similar hatred for her.

If you bowed to corporate sponsorship it would be to advertise… Libra Tampons. I don’t know why, it was just the first thing that popped into my head. And why tampons were the first thing to pop into my head, I will never know.

Your dream bill for a night… It would definitely be us opening for The Zombies. They’ve had such a big influence on us.

An unknown Hungry Kids Of Hungary fact… We have a very twisted and dark sense of humour.

What next for Hungry Kids Of Hungary… We’re just about to tour our new album around Australia and play a couple of festivals. There’s also talk of another overseas trip and of course a second album all in the next twelve months.
