Sculpture by the Sea Is Back

Seeing the already picturesque Bondi to Tamarama walk transformed into an alfresco art gallery is pretty bloody amazing. And so it is that the annual Sculpture by the Sea exhibition is set to sail once again this year from Thursday, October 28 to Sunday, November 14. With over 100 sculptures on display for your viewing pleasure, Sculpture by the Sea is non-negotiable – you will go and you will love it.

With artworks by both local and international artists on display, Sculpture by the Sea is now the largest temporary sculpture exhibition in the world, attracting around 500,000 visitors to the eastern suburbs over three weeks each year. Despite the locals’ disdain, this hectic, hustle and bustle of cheesy tourists and arty farty enthusiasts does bring a great vibe to the Eastern ‘Burbs and it’s a splendid way to welcome summer and get some sun on your pearly white, winter skin.

And if you’re of albino or vampire descent and you can’t step foot in to the daylight, fear not, Sculpture Inside is an indoor exhibition of sculpture held to coincide with the outdoor exhibition, featuring works by exhibiting artists and selected invited artists. It is free too, and provides a wonderful opportunity to purchase works by emerging, mid-career and established Australian and international artists. The Sculpture Inside marquee will be at Mark’s Park, Tamarama.

Still can’t get enough sculpture? Well, each Saturday and Sunday at 3pm during the exhibition you can meet the Sculpture by the Sea artists and hear them speak about their artistic journey – hell, you can even heckle them if you must. This is also free and it too will be held in the Sculpture Inside marquee at Mark’s Park, Tamarama.

To get maximum enjoyment during your exhibition experience, The Beast recommends the following: make sure you wear comfortable walking shoes, plenty of sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat. And don’t be scared to embrace your inner photographer and take plenty of happy snaps.
