Indie pop has never sounded so yummy. Bright, anthemic and full of heart, Buchanan just might be one of my new faves. Hailing from Melbourne town, you may have heard the title track from their glorious new album ‘Human Spring’ lighting up the airwaves on Triple J, or caught an earful of them busting out a cheeky bit of Frank Ocean as part of the same station’s ‘Like A Version’ segment.

If you haven’t seen them live (and trust me, they look even better than they sound!), then by golly this is your chance, as they’ve got a couple of shows lined up for us Sydney folk in July.

During the month I chatted to lead singer Josh to get a taste of just what we’re in for….

When we arrive in Sydney for the gig, the first thing we’ll do is… sound check, most probably with our clothes on.

Our hometown is… Melbourne.

The most exciting thing about the local music scene is… the fact that on any night of any week there are always several solid bands playing at several of our favourite drinking holes.

I’d like to think that our music is… catchy as f**k and touching in some way.

My earliest music memory is… receiving my first keyboard on my third birthday.

Growing up, my parents listened to… Billy Joel, Led Zeppelin, The Supremes – lots of great music.

One song that makes me really nostalgic is… ‘Africa’ by Toto and ‘I Want To Know What Love Is’ by Foreigner.

There was this one time when we were starting out that… we were driving back from a show in Adelaide and a kangaroo jumped in front of our car. Very scary!

If I could have written any song, it would be… ‘Let It Be’ by The Beatles.

If you come and see us play, you can expect… a big sounding show with lots and lots of energy. We definitely have some fun on stage!

My dream gig… would be playing on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury. Any year!

I never want to get to the point where… we’re only repeating our past achievements.

I’ll know we’ve really made it when… my mum is no longer our biggest fan!

You can catch the boys from Buchanan live in Sydney (twice if you’re super keen) at the Old Manly Boatshed on Friday, July 12 or, closer to home, at Goodgod Small Club on Saturday, July 13. To find out more about Buchanan and to listen to their sound, jump on to www.buchananband.com.
