Bondi The Beautiful Fair – A Celebration Of All Things Beautiful

For those who have the privilege of living in or around Bondi, it is needless to say how beautiful an area it truly is.

To celebrate all that this unique suburb has to offer, Waverley Council will be holding the Bondi The Beautiful Fair on Sunday, June 5, 2011, from 10am to 4pm.

It is no coincidence either that the fair will fall on World Environment Day, which celebrates and raises knowledge of positive environmental action.

The Bondi The Beautiful Fair will kick-start the Bondi Winter Magic Festival, an initiative to bring people to Bondi throughout winter. The fair is a fantastic opportunity for the community to come together in the cooler months when people tend to retreat to the comfort of their homes instead of enjoying what the local area still has to offer.

The fair will provide free live music, kid’s entertainment, face painting, a kiddy farm, food stalls and art exhibitions and much more.

However, it is also a chance to educate yourselves and your children about simple ways to have a positive impact on our local environment.

According to the Waverley Council Project Officer, Bondi & Beaches Division Jodie Walker, the fair is about much more than just fun.

“Council will be using the fair as an educational tool, focusing on all of our key areas such as water, biodiversity, sustainable transport and energy,” Walker told The Beast.

The fair will recognise local community groups and the amazing work they do to help keep Bondi beautiful. Groups including Permaculture East, CASES (Climate Action Sydney Eastern Suburbs), WIRES, Oxfam and the Nature Conservation Council will all be there on the day. This is a perfect opportunity to pick up some great tips about sustainable living.

“People in attendance will be able to find out about things like Greenpower, car share programs, electric bikes, recycling programs and storm water harvesting systems,” Walker added.

Bondi the Beautiful will also celebrate Waverley’s diverse community and culture. To celebrate the creative environment, renowned Australian photographic artist Anne Zahalka will set up an outdoor photographic portrait studio.

Members of the local community are also encouraged to bring along a garment that needs repairing and they will be taught how to mend it, courtesy of the FixitFest, which will also be taking place. You can even bring a small piece of junk to be created into a piece of artwork by the Found Objects Artists collaborative.

Alternatively, you can watch old footage of Bondi in the mini cinema or check out the impressive local talent on display at the Chilly Sk8 Jam competition.

Mayor of Waverley, Sally Betts is hopeful the community will get behind this great winter event.

“We hope the community will come to the fair to embrace the change of season and celebrate all the wonderful winter activities that will be taking place over the next three months,” Mayor Betts told The Beast.
