Make Some Serious Space In Your Wardrobe
It’s time to make some serious space in your wardrobe and update your look for the latest shapes and styles of the season. Take a glance at what’s on runways and in-store at the moment and you’ll see an array of boxy, loose-fitting and oversized silhouettes. While this may be hard for some, it’s time to pack up those form-fitting skirts, skimpy dresses, and super tight tees and hit the stores for a quick wardrobe update.Don’t forget to check out what you have stashed in storage and incorporate pieces back into your wardrobe that are once again in vogue – there’s a resurgence in pastel hues, metallic embellishments and eye-catching graphic prints. Also make sure that your wardrobe staples are ready to wear, not languishing in the bottom of a laundry basket waiting to be dry cleaned or in a long forgotten pile of clothes waiting for buttons and hems to be repaired (guilty!).
If you’re looking for inspiration this season, think back to the stylish woman you spotted at the airport this summer checking in next to you; the one with the groomed hair, chic wardrobe and neatly packed suitcase full of relaxed-fit and easy-to-wear clothes – think slouchy trousers, boxy tops, light-weight sweaters and slip dresses.
So what else will she be buying this season?
The cocoon jacket – Think part biker, part bomber jacket. Trust me, this round-shouldered jacket will be your go-to cover up this season.
The shift dress – Look for mini or knee lengths (with or without sleeves, depending on how toned your arms are). I’m currently looking for the perfect piece in classic mid-summer white.
The relaxed trouser – Think up-scaled sweatpants in luxe fashion fabrics. This sporty look is too cool for the gym.
The boxy top – Whether patterned, textured or simply plain, this piece is making appearances in the wardrobes of many in the fashion pack, but take note, it’s not suited to all body shapes.
The lingerie-inspired dress – Look for a floaty, slip style dress to be worn with a light cardie for those cooler nights.
Double denim – I’m not talking a matchy-matchy pairing of blue jeans with a blue denim shirt. I still shudder when I think back to Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake’s matching double denim ensembles. I’m talking a perfect pair of white denim jeans (Current Elliot) and a dark denim boxy top, or a pale blue denim blazer with leather lapels (I love the piece by One Teaspoon) paired with a waxed black denim jean.
The flat shoe – For once there is no dominant style, like the ballet flat, but rather a myriad of shapes that make it impossible not to find something that suits. How liberating to be able to look stylish and yet be able to stand all day without the constant low level discomfort of a high heel!
