Pigeon – A Bottomless Keg Of Creativeness

I really hate birds. ‘Rodents of the air’ I like to call them. They have beaks, they’re angry, they crap on you and they’re dirty. Pigeons are the worst of all, so you can imagine the surprise I felt when I listened to Brissy band Pigeon last week and found myself thoroughly enjoying the electro-happy vibes. Then when band member Luke submitted the following answers I knew it was love…

The band name comes from… the Latin origin, ‘Pigeonus shenaniganus’, meaning ‘tropical-electro-horns-party-rock-music’.

We’re from Brissy, which means… we’re into beers, any time, all the time. Also, we get cold easy.

The most exciting thing about the local music scene is… the amount of ambitious and exciting stuff pouring out of Australia at the moment. It’s like a bottomless keg of creativeness.

The first time we played together was… a body paint themed house party. The amount of clothing being worn was inversely proportional to the length of time the party was going.

We wrote ‘Two Moon Love’… as a bit of a ‘yolo’ track. It was a latecomer to the ideas table, but we kind of had such a fun time experimenting with sounds and different stuff that it became one of the tracks we decided to release.

I’d like to think that our music is… what I imagine riding a unicorn might be like.

My earliest music memory is… writing a whole bunch of songs and performing them for my mum and dad when I was six. I completely disregarded melody, harmony and rhythm, as the lyrics were what that particular project was about. My first musical endeavour was a comment on modern society rather than just another project.

One song that makes me really nostalgic is… ‘Without me’ by Eminem. I still love that song.

There was this one time when we were starting out that… we took a year to write, record and produce two songs.

If I could have written any song, it would be… ‘Sly’ by The Cat Empire – possibly the most fun song ever.

My fave festival memory is… dancing like a fool to Foster the People at Splendour In The Grass a couple of years ago, and consequently showering everyone surrounding me in my beverages.

If you come and see us play you can expect… a very, very slim possibility that someone might get injured. We’re not a very coordinated band, so when we try overly ambitious stage rock outs something is bound to go wrong.

My dream gig… is one with food on the rider.

I never want to get to the point where… I can’t distinguish between late fifties Coltrane and early sixties Coltrane.

I’ll know we’ve really made it when… no one has the burden of being post-gig designated driver.

The boys from Pigeon hit our fair town on February 7, launching their sophomore EP ‘Settle In’ at the Brighton Up Bar. For more information about Pigeon, check out www.pigeonofficial.com.
