Randwick History Book Wins Coveted Award
Randwick City Council’s history book, Randwick, was recognised recently at the prestigious NSW Premier’s History Awards, winning the NSW Community and Regional History category.
Randwick, which was written by professional historian Pauline Curby and published in 2009 to mark the Council’s 150th anniversary, was reviewed by a panel of judges, who said, “This book sets a new benchmark for the writing and production of local history.”
“The author has embraced all the topics one might expect to find in a municipal history – such as the growth of local industry, sporting identities, the growth of suburbia – and added others that often do not get explored, for example, crime, and the ongoing relationship between indigenous residents and Europeans.”
The Mayor of Randwick, Cr Murray Matson, was delighted with the win, saying, “Randwick is a book that appeals to people from all walks of life. It is accessible, photographically rich and a must for any resident’s personal collection.
“To be recognised for its contribution to collecting and conserving local history in the NSW Premier’s History Awards demonstrates the importance of this publication in bringing our rich history to life,” said the Mayor.
“Our history determines the way we view our future and I encourage anyone who has not yet had the pleasure of reading the book to buy a copy from the Council’s administration building or one of our Libraries.’
