A Trend In Need Is A Trend Indeed

Once upon a time, the fashionable men and women of the world used to wait for the latest copy of Vogue or Harper’s Bazaar to report on the hemlines, colours and sleeve lengths shown in Paris, before investing in the new ‘uniform’ for the season. Back then, before the concept of individual style, following the fashion of the day was ‘the’ way to look stylish.

Today there are so many styles to follow. New looks ‘come in’ while others continue to trend – and trend and trend – from ‘mah-jor’ trends, to mini-trends and micro-trends. As the timeline and essence of trends have evolved, style has been replicated, duplicated, imitated and turned, essentially, into a blog. And in this age of blogs and Pinterest and Instagram, who’s to say what is on trend and what is not anymore?

Sure, we still have Vogue and all the time-honoured magazines that drive fashion and its reportage, but we also have infinite new outlets. Some share fashion news, some share reviews and others just share outfits. It seems great, but there’s also a risk of over-saturation – a broad sense of stimulation that is so vast and relentless, it doesn’t even stimulate anymore.

Someone asked me the other day about the ‘latest’ looks, but is there really a latest look or just the latest take on a look that has been here hundreds of times before? And where does that leave us? I say wear what makes you feel stylish, don’t just imitate something that you’ve seen work on your best friend or sister or work colleague. Step out in pieces that you know you look good in and that suit you and your body shape. Style is all about confidence.
