Frothers Monthly – Bailey Richards

By Brad Malyon on October 25, 2010 in People

Our youth are our future, or something like that. This month we get to know Bondi youngster Bailey Richards. Full of potential and enthusiasm, you’ll often see him doing cheeky drop-ins before and after school.

Name: Bailey Richards
Age: 12
Local break: Bondeye
Board shaper: Hayden Shapes &=and Lee Stacey
Dimensions: 4’11 16 1 and 3 quarters

How is high school treating you?
I hate high school! But daydreaming about surfing and watching the waves outside the window are daily rituals.

When did you first stand up on a board?
I first started surfing when I was like six; I loved it from the start.

Are Mum and Dad still allowed to be spectators?
They are always allowed to spectate!

How are you going at boardriders’ this year?
I am going ok but I have missed a few boardriders’ comps because of other comps. I think I’m coming fourth.

Have you entered any other comps recently?
I went in the Rusty Gromfest and made the quarters. It was so hard (kids from America).

You broke your arm a few months back, was it hard to get back in form?
Yeah, it was very hard. My first surf in eight weeks was at Southside Eliminations. It was hard because I could barely stand up.

Have you been on many surf trips?
I went to Snapper and love it so much, and I’m going to Hawaii in December.

Your favourite surf spot?
Guillotines on the South Coast.

Is a young whipper-snapper like yourself sponsored?
Yeah. My sponsors are STM, Surf Culture and Greenstuff Wax.

If you could be any pro, who would you be?
I would be local boy Perth Standlick.

What do you want to do after school?
I would like to be a shaper, a pro surfer or plumber.

How do you keep busy when there is no surf?
When I don’t surf I have a cod sesh with the boys in the garage. That’s a computer game by the way for you oldies!

Anything else you’d like to add?
Just a shout out to my mates for their support!
