Clovelly resident Melissa Martin was born and raised in Bronte and she now runs Studio Calypso, arguably the best boutique design studio the Eastern Beaches area has ever known. She shares her local favourites with The Beast…

How long have you lived here?
I’ve lived here as long as I can remember. I was born and raised in Bronte and I now live in Clovelly.

What’s your favourite beach?

My favourite beach is still Bronte, whether it’s for swimming, exercising, barbecuing with friends, or just laying in the sun. I’ve had a lot of great times there.

What’s your favourite eatery?
I’ve taken a liking to Huxtons in Bronte recently. It’s got a relaxed vibe and awesome coffee and food. They nail it every time. But I miss Jeds in Bondi too.

Where do you like to have a drink?
In our sunroom. Each summer we get closer to mastering the perfect margarita.

Best thing about the Eastern Suburbs?
It’s actually a buzzing little creative hub if you look in the right places. There’s inspiration around every corner. The beaches are definitely the highlight, though. We are so lucky to have some many choices that aren’t too far from each other.

Worst thing about the Eastern Suburbs?

The traffic is getting insane, to the point where it’s just not worth having a car. Property prices are ridiculous as well.

Do you have a favourite sporting team?

I don’t really follow football much anymore, but I’d say the Manly Sea Eagles purely because my dad and brother have always supported them, so it’s kind of expected of me to follow them as well.

What music are you into at the moment?
I love all types of music. The Shazam app introduces me to new bands daily. My boyfriend’s guitar skills are my hands down favourite though.

Who is your favourite person?

Apart from the obvious boyfriend/family/friends, I had a fascination with David Bowie in the movie Labyrinth. Following this role, whether he was on screen, on stage, or on the street, he had so much character and a vibrant talent that inspired me in many ways.

What do you get up to on the weekends?
I’m outdoors as much as possible over the weekends. I love catching up with friends, doing the crosswords in the paper with my other half, and going up or down the coast for some relaxation time. If its rainy weather I enjoy rugging up, putting the tunes on, and painting the day away at home.

What do you do for work?
I’m a graphic designer and illustrator. I love being able to design for a living. I’m passionate about it and I find that the more I do it, the more I love it.

What’s your favourite thing about work?
Creativity, of course! I love being able to bring a visual identity to life through design.

Do you have a favourite quote?
Nike has been doing some interesting rebranding lately, but ‘Just Do It’ still remains so relevant.
