Bronte’s Jessi Miley-Dyer has returned to form after missing most of last season with a knee problem.

At the Drug Awareness Pro at Margaret River she posted the event’s top scoring heat with two excellent scores of 8.97 and 8.33 for a total heat tally of 17.30 to comprehensively thrash her opponents in the round of 24.

“It worked out well for me but that’s not how I planned the heat,” said Miley-Dyer.

“I actually paddled out looking to surf the lefts off the break but I caught an early right peeling wave and was surprised just how good that wave was – after that I stuck with the rights and had a great heat.”

Jessi moved through to the round of 12 where she finished second to Brazil’s Silvana Lima to earn herself a berth in the quarter finals, where she will meet American Sage Erickson.

Tom Whitaker was also in form and won his way through to the round of 48 where he will come up against fellow Australian Jay Thompson, New Zealand’s Billy Stairmand and Damien Hobgood from the US.

Surfing superman Kelly Slater proved he had lost none of his Western Australian form after returning to the Margaret River contest arena for the first time since 1993, when he had only one world title to his name.

He has also progressed to the round of 48.
