Perth band Crooked Colours are really good. Yes, it’s an awkward way to start an article, but I swear to you they are really good.

Their newly released debut EP ‘In Your Bones’ is all sexy vocals over killer electro beats and choruses that range from haunting to happy. Having recently wrapped a support slot for RUFUS, they’re now set to tour their own stuff along the east and west coast, hitting the shores of Sydney on July 18. If this interview is anything to go by, your attendance will ensure a one-way ticket to Sweatville. Bring it on!

Perth is a kickass city because… the girls are pretty, the beaches are ridiculous, the food is insane, the weather is perfect, the vibe is righteous, the music is crisp… we could go on, but it would probably be a shorter list if you asked us why Perth is NOT a kickass city.

We wrote ‘In Your Bones’… in a very short period of time. We got pretty lucky with this one; it was one of those songs that just kind of happened in an afternoon. If we can figure out the ingredients that go into getting that creative headspace going where we’re all just vibing, we’ll be set!

The band name came about when… we found out about Leon’s dad’s old racing team The Crooked Cats. He used to race motorbikes like a badass back in the 70s. Thinking of a good band name is the hardest thing ever. We’re still not sick of ours so I guess that’s a good sign.

If you come to see us play you can expect… sweat! We try to keep it high energy with a lot of head banging and hip gyrating.

After twenty days on the road together… we all still get along. It gets pretty lonely when you’re touring as ninety percent of the time you are either in transit or in a hotel room, so we’re all pretty glad to be doing it with friends.

There was this one time starting out that… we thought it would be a great idea to play a festival with our old hardware synths. Turns out they don’t like sitting in the sun for longer than twenty minutes and will randomly start skipping through patches.

You may not guess that we’re actually big fans of… Creedence Clearwater Revival. Just the fact that they wrote that many hits in the space of five years is insane. It’s also epic to put on when everyone’s shit-faced in the backyard.

Our dream gig would have to be… to play at any major festival. Festivals are the shit! They are so much fun. You always get a rider, you get a free feed and you get to meet a bunch of amazing artists. Perfect.

I’ll know we’ve made it when… We can buy our own vinyl at 78 Records. There’s something so legit about vinyl. It’s not just a hard copy, it’s an expensive hard copy. It’s like, “Damn, these guys have vinyls cut. That means they’re serious.”

Crooked Colours hit Goodgod Small Club on July 18. For tickets to the show and to find out more about the band, jump on to www.crookedcoloursmusic.com.
