New Navy Set Sail On East Coast Tour

By John Bones on May 13, 2011 in Arts

After winning last year’s Jack Daniels Set off a three-track demo, New Navy went on to play with the likes of Wolfmother, The Philly Jays, Midnight Juggernauts, The Scare and The Holidays. The band has been extremely busy writing and recording their debut EP alongside Jono Ma from the Lost Valentinos. Titled Ulluwatu, the EP is melodic and upbeat, with undercurrents of darkness running throughout, and it will be available through the band’s website – www.newnavy.com.au – with the single, Zimbabwe, offered as a free download. New Navy will be launching their debut EP on May 28 at Sydney’s newest venue, FBi Social within the Kings Cross Hotel, before embarking on a full East Coast tour. During the month The Beast caught up with New Navy frontman Ben McInerny…

New Navy in a sentence is… Four humans, three guitars, a drum kit and a lot of energy.

First memory of music… Probably some old Neil Diamond tapes in the car. Any excuse for my dad and he is blasting some Sweet Caroline.

First album you bought… Was within the ‘nu metal’ genre and will not be spoken about in this interview.

Song that gives you goosebumps… Like The 309 by Johnny Cash.

Fave driving album/s… It’s got to be something 80s. Shall we go with some Hall and Oates?

A New Navy highlight… Playing the Espy in Melbourne to a full house with Wolfmother.

If you could pick a supergroup its members would be… Johnny Cash, Morrissey, Yannis Philippakis (Foals) and Robert Smith (The Cure).

Sydney bands giving you the good tingles at the moment… Rapids, Deep Sea Arcade and Boats of Berlin.

Fave Sydney venue… Oxford Art Factory – great vibes.

Band or genre that gives you an ice-cream headache… Rap riffs.

Your dream bill for a night (New Navy included of course)… The Cure, Foals and us.

An unknown New Navy fact… We all grew up in the quaint South Coast village of Ulladulla.

What next for New Navy… Global domination… well, actually a new EP, film clip and a bunch of shows.
