Swimwear – The Best Way To Feel Good

By John Bones on May 9, 2012 in Arts

Tim Derricourt may be best known as the co-frontman of Sydney indie pop rockers Dappled Cities but of late he has been making a name for himself through his new project, Swimwear.

His debut EP ‘The Kissing Machine’ has been getting plenty of play on Triple J and FBi radio, and it’s proving to be quite the hit, thanks largely to the incredibly catchy first track, ‘Nowhere To Run’.

Unashamedly camp, sexy and seductive (in a kind of creepy way), Swimwear will infiltrate the conscience of the unassuming and having them busting out Bob Downe-esque dance moves and singing along in no time.

During the month The Beast caught up with Derricourt for a quick chat…

Swimwear in a sentence is… The best way to feel good, dance happily and learn about my incredible insights through lyric.

First memory of music… Jimi Hendrix – ‘Hey Joe’. I thought it was going to be ‘Hey Jude’ when I bought it, but it turned out so much better.

First album you bought… That one. Jimi Hendrix – ‘Live at Winterland’.

Song that gives you goosebumps… I can’t hear ‘Teardrops’ by Womack and Womack without feeling something. It’s not even that emotional – it’s just so damn good.

Fave driving album/s… I’ve been obsessed with Beach House’s ‘Teen Dream’. I listen to it in pretty much most travelling environments or when I’m trying to block the world out.

A Swimwear highlight… Well it’s been a long run, what with five months under my belt, but I’d probably say… the last five months. Having my song slamming out of the radio is actually very thrilling, so I guess that.

If you could pick a supergroup its members would be… It would have Emmylou Harris and Damon Albarn duelling out the front, I’d be in it but hanging back next to Steven Drozd (Flaming Lips), Yani would be on keyboards and there’d be a marching band from some American university on drums. Imagine that!

Sydney bands giving you the good tingles at the moment… I love Royal Headache and Flume. And Pear Shape is a band that everyone is also going to start loving very soon.

Fave Sydney venue… The defunct Hopetoun is my choice in memory, but I always have a good time at FBi Social.

Band or genre that gives you an ice-cream headache… I guess it would be that British version of soft rock – not like Take That or anything – more those bands like Travis and Coldplay (some of that’s alright I guess) that just seem like they should open a wet sock store and quit complaining.

If you bowed to corporate sponsorship it would be to advertise… Backpacks. I love backpacks. If I could be provided with a new backpack each week I would be very happy (and a bit guilty about the children that have to sew the seams and make them and stuff).

Your dream bill for a night (Swimwear included of course)… I’m wanting to organise a sexy man night of me (of course), Donny Benet and Geoffrey O’Connor. We all seem to be doing the crooner front man thing at the moment and I reckon it’d be a real pants-off night!

An unknown Swimwear fact… I’m the drummer from Take That. I got left out of all the clips so I formed my own damn band.

What next for Swimwear… I‘m going to be playing a bunch of shows throughout the year and working on a follow up EP and hopefully an album sometime in the New Year!
