Ulladulla not only boasts Rowan’s Arcade stalwart Funland (the best wet day boredom breaker ever) and a mean schnitty at the local Ex-Servos, it is also home to remix king and certified party starter DJ Yahtzel.

Having survived the bloodbath that is Ulladulla’s Marlin Hotel, DJ Yahtzel will be playing alongside some of Australia’s biggest names at Listen Out festival this month. It’s on in Centennial Park too, so all of us Eastern suburbs locals can easily head on over, sink a couple of cold ones in the sun and then stumble home when it’s all over, which certainly beats the endurance test that is a trip to Homebush. We caught up with DJ Yahtzel during the month in eager anticipation of his arrival…

My hometown is… Ulladulla on the NSW south coast.

The name Yahtzel came from… my fathers nickname for me as a child.

Listen Out will be a killer festival because… Tkay Maidza is playing. She’s the coolest chick ever with a monster stage attitude.

I’m excited to share the bill alongside… Golden Features, Tkay Maidza, Four Tet and Shlomo, to name just a few.

The one thing I hope I see in the crowd during my set is… a few shoulder surfers and a couple of beach balls.

The most exciting thing about the local music scene is… the mateship and comradery of a lot of these artists.

I’d like to think that my music is… giving someone, somewhere, something… hopefully.

My earliest music memory is… playing the pots and pans as a toddler.

Growing up, my parents listened to… Jesus Christ Superstar, Hunters and Collectors, Crowded House, The Cure, The Pogues, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Lou Reed, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.

One song that makes me really nostalgic is… The Pogues – ‘Dirty Old Town’ and Hunters and Collectors – ‘Throw Your Arms Around Me’.

If I could have written any song, it would be… Fatboy Slim – ‘Praise You’.

If you come and see me play, you can expect… a drink afterwards.

My dream gig is… at the civic center in my hometown of Ulladulla. I’ve wanted to throw a party there for ages (and bring an awesome line-up, of course).

I never want to get to the point where I… let other people dictate my musical decisions.

I’ll know I’ve really made it when… I’m wearing sandals to the Oscars.

Yahtzel will be paying at Listen Out with Flume, Chet Faker, ZHU, Ta-ku, Schoolboy Q and more on Saturday, September 27 at Centennial Park from 2pm to 10pm. For info and tickets, go to www.listen-out.com.au.
