Many amazing members of our community put an immense amount of hard work and dedication into raising funds for worthy causes. Bronte boys and best mates James Vesper and Cam Clark can now be added to that list, having run the recent 42 kilometre Blackmores Sydney Marathon to raise money for a bladder scanner for the Outpatients Department at the Sydney Children’s Hospital.

The boys raised a commendable $17,716 for the scanner, which was the number one item on the top of the hospital’s ‘wish list’.

“I’d like to thank everyone who donated. We have simply been blown away by everyone’s generosity, support and encouragement over the past few months,” Vesper told The Beast.

“Building up the training was really satisfying and Cam was always good for a few motivating words. When I first mentioned the whole idea of the marathon Cam said to me: ‘Jim, I like it. If you want to win something, run 100 meters. If you want to experience something run a marathon.’ I thought that was pure inspiration. And good use of Google,” Vesper laughed.

The boys finished in an impressive time of 4 hours 20 minutes. The last eight kilometres drove Vesper to his limit, but Clark’s motivational jokes helped ease the build up of lactic acid and Bronte local Martin Palfrey assisted in pushing Vesper over the finish line.

Regardless of how the boys finished, the staff and kids at the Sydney Children’s Hospital will be better off with their brand new piece of lifesaving equipment.
