Randwick’s Hidden Chinatown Unveiled

By Marcus Braid on December 11, 2014 in News

The hidden Chinatown of the Eastern Suburbs is preparing to host the inaugural Kingsford Night Noodle Markets, highlighting the multicultural demographic of the area.

A wide variety of cuisine will be on offer at the markets, with Thai, Chinese, Malaysian, and Japanese cuisines among an array of Asian influences on offer.

Grace Houw, Events Officer at Randwick Council, said there was an air of anticipation building up to the event, which will take place on Saturday, December 6 at Meeks Street in Kingsford from 4pm to 9pm.

“This is our first one and it’s pretty exciting,” she said. “It’s aim is to highlight Kingsford as a hidden Chinatown. It’s not really well known yet, so we wanted to showcase how special Kingsford is.”

Kingsford has around 4,000 residents of Chinese ancestry among its 17,000 residents, which is more than the approximately 2,000 residents of Australian ancestry and 2,000 of English heritage.

The markets will offer a taste of the best that the area has to offer. Local restaurants will take a stall and cook their signature dishes fresh in front of those in attendance.

There will also be plenty of entertainment on offer for both adults and kids alike.

“I can’t say what at the moment, but there will definitely be kids’ activities,” Ms Houw said. “There will also be firecrackers and roving performers, and a bilingual MC.”

“We’re having live music and dragon dancing, and we’re still trying to get a tea leaf reader on board.”
