Cycle Series Comes To Coogee
Lycra lovers rejoice; it was announced recently that Olympic champions and big name international cyclists will go head-to-head in the NSW International Grand Prix Cycling series at Coogee Beach on Saturday, December 11.The new cycling series, launched by the Honourable Kevin Green, Minister for Major Events, Minister for Sport and Recreation and Minister for Gaming and Racing, is an expansion of the Cronulla International Grand Prix.
The five day series, featuring both men’s and women’s races, will showcase Australia’s Olympic, Commonwealth and World Champions as they race against international riders, some of whom have competed in the Tour de France.
The Coogee Beach event is the fourth leg of the series and features a 920-metre circuit along Arden Street, fronting the beach.
The Mayor of Randwick, Cr Murray Matson, was excited about the prospect of hosting the event and encouraged locals to get along and show their support.
“This is a great coup for the suburb of Coogee and Randwick City as a whole,” said the Mayor.
“Australia cyclists have achieved terrific success internationally, winning medals at both the Delhi Commonwealth Games and Beijing Olympics.”
“It’s not every day a high level sporting event is staged in staged in your own backyard, so I encourage everyone to head down to Coogee Beach and cheer on the Aussie riders as they compete against some of the world’s best competitive cyclists,” he added.
The five-day NSW International Cycling Grand Prix Series will be staged from December 8 at Bathurst, Parramatta, Gosford and Coogee, and ending on December 12 at Cronulla.
The Coogee Beach event begins at 2pm with the 20-kilometre women’s race followed shortly afterwards by the 36-kilometre men’s race.
