Waverley resident Mark Vicol started a hot sauce and gentlemen’s grooming business about a year ago, and it’s still going strong. Mark shares his local favourites with The Beast…

How long have you lived here?
Two years. I feel like I’ve been slowly migrating to the Eastern Suburbs for the last ten years. First Canberra, then the Inner West and now I’ve found home. I won’t be moving on any time soon.

What’s your favourite beach?
Bronte. It’s walking distance from my house, but apart from that I love the laid-back atmosphere and village feel.

What’s your favourite eatery?
Ruby’s Diner in Waverley; very tasty breakfasts and the friendliest staff around.

Where do you like to have a drink?
The Robin Hood is great for a quick pint, plus I like to hit up the Platinum Liquor in Bellevue Hill and grab some interesting brews to drink on the hill at Bronte.

Do you have a favourite sporting team?
I’m a Brumbies and Raiders fan at heart, but I’m coming around to the idea of supporting the Roosters.

What music are you into at the moment?
I’m getting into The National and a bit of Disclosure never goes astray, but there isn’t anything like turning up the volume and blasting out some Frenzal Rhomb.

Who is your favourite person?
Nicola; my partner in crime and in travelling the world. It just wouldn’t be the same without her around.

What do you get up to on the weekends?
I’ve got a tried and tested Saturday morning routine: early morning paddle at Bronte or a run through Centennial Park, breakfast at Ruby’s, hit up the Bondi Farmers Markets and hang around for a swim at Bondi.

What do you do for work?
I’m currently chipping away at a PhD at Sydney Uni, but my true love in life is Handsome Devils Co. It’s a little business a few Bronte mates and I started about a year ago. At the moment we hand-make three delicious hot sauces, plus we have a gentlemen’s grooming range including beard oils and aftershave balm.

What’s your favourite thing about your work?
Trying to get a small business off the ground is challenging, but the best part is hearing how much someone loved our hot sauce.

Do you have a favourite quote?
I think, therefore I am. Any other words of wisdom for readers of The Beast? Look after your taste buds and grab some Handsome Devils Co. hot sauce. In partnership with the gang at Beard Season, we will also be donating $5 from every beard oil bottle sold from www.handsomedevilsco.com in 2014 to the Melanoma Institute.
