Bondi tarot card reader Ruth Marks shares her local favou- rites with The Beast…

How long have you lived in Bondi?
All my life; my mother and father were born here and all my children live here.

What’s your favourite beach?
Bondi of course, although I do love the other beaches in the area like Bronte and Clovelly. I like the harbour beaches like Nielsen Park, Camp Cove and Redleaf as well.

What’s your favourite eatery?
I like Thai food very much and Spice Market in Double Bay is great. I have a few cafés I go to like the Secret Garden in Rose Bay and The Bucket List at Bondi is a great place to eat. I also like to have a steak at some of our great pubs in the area.

Where do you like to have a drink?
I’m not a big drinker, but I catch up with friends sometimes at the Hotel Bondi and the Sheaf.

Do you have a favourite sporting team?
I would have to say the Sydney Swans – what a great year they have had! My three sons and three grandsons are avid fans of the Sydney Swans.

What music are you into at the moment?
I love all music: rock, country, classicals, Broadway shows… all sorts of music. I even go to karaoke sometimes. Music is very important to me.

Who is your favourite person?
I have a lot of favourites. Mainly they are in the arts, music, film and writing and I can’t name them all.

What do you get up to on the weekends?
I read tarot cards at Glebe Markets on Saturdays and Bondi Markets on Sundays. I have been working at both markets for 12 years. After work I usually go out with friends and listen to music.

Do you have a favourite quote?
“This is not a rehearsal; enjoy yourself, it only comes around once.”

What do you do for work?
I have been reading tarot cards for 20 years now. I work at the markets on the weekends and read tarot on the psychic phone line during the week. I also do private readings, hen’s nights, birthday parties and corporate functions during the week. I have worked in many places reading tarot cards, including the Australian Logie Awards in Sydney, the Playboy Mansion in LA, a private birthday party in Mexico City and also for the Harlem Singers in New York, and at many corporate functions and parties here in Sydney.

What’s your favourite thing about work?
I like helping people with work, love, money, home and life in general by giving them the right guidance through the tarot cards – the cards tell me a lot about people. I find that men have become more interested over the years. When I first started reading cards, a lot of men thought it was a big joke but now I have many male clients.
