Clovelly physiotherapist and dancefloor extraordinaire Lyz Evans shares her local favourites with The Beast…

How long have you lived here?
I have lived in the Eastern Suburbs since I was born. I grew up in Little Bay/Malabar and gradually moved further north along the beaches over the years. My fiancé and I bought our first house together in Clovelly three years ago, which we are planning to renovate this year.

What’s your favourite beach?
I’m a sucker for a beach with no sand, so I mix my beach time up between Clovelly, Wylie’s Baths and Nielsen Park.

What’s your favourite eatery?
I am definitely a ‘live to eat’ type of girl, so this is a tough question! It really depends on the meal. I love the brekky bowl at M Deli in Tamarama, for a quick coffee, Parc Café on Clovelly Road, and for a delicious local dinner, Bronte Road Bistro.

Where do you like to have a drink?
To be honest I don’t have one favourite drinking venue. We’re lucky to live such outdoor lifestyles here so I can’t go past a few ciders at a friend’s barbecue or a weekend long lunch and champagne at one of Sydney’s many restaurants and bars.

Do you have a favourite sporting team?
I’m not going to lie, I love finals season because it means the sports season is almost over. Particularly the football; it means I get my fiancé back!

What music are you into at the moment?
As with everyone else, I’m blown away by Lorde’s talent and I’m loving London Grammar to chill out to. Also Rudimental or The XX for some fun.

Who is your favourite person?
I’m going to sound like one of those crazy dog people here, but I have to say my adorable little bulldog Maggie. I know she’s not really a person, but since getting her two years ago I haven’t met a person she doesn’t make smile. She’s absolutely hilarious and brings us so much happiness and love every day.

What do you get up to on the weekends?
Monday to Friday is pretty go-go-go, so in order to balance it out the weekends are all about relaxing and catching up with friends. Saturday mornings usually start with a trip to the gym, followed by breakfast and the paper. Then it’s time to hit the park with Maggie. Depending on what’s going on, a good catch up with friends over dinner and drinks is the ideal evening.

What do you do for work?
I’m a physiotherapist who specialises in women’s health, including pregnancy and postnatal care. I run my own business; it’s called Women In Focus Physiotherapy – we’re based in Bondi Junction. I also work at the Royal Hospital for Women in Randwick. A typical day includes treating pregnant women for back and pelvic pain, helping postnatal women with their pelvic floor and abdominal muscles, as well as running functional pilates classes to help all women strengthen their core and pelvic floor muscles.

What’s your favourite thing about work?
I feel really lucky to have found an area of health that I am extremely passionate about. The female body is such an amazing creation that experiences incredible changes throughout life, especially the child- bearing years. I am a big believer in keeping women fit and strong through this period as a healthy mum has more energy to inject into her family and community. I feel very lucky that my job allows me to help women achieve this on a daily basis.

Do you have a favourite quote?
It’s a really nerdy quote but it reminds me to think outside the box. “It is through science that we prove, but through intuition that we discover.”

Do you like to dance when you’re drunk?
If you can call it that, yes. I absolutely love to bust a move after a few drinks. Interpretive dance is my favourite style and dance-offs are my weakness. I can’t help it, I just get really excited when I find someone willing to put up with my moves.

Any other words of wisdom for readers of The Beast?
This one’s for the ladies out there: if you are still not sure how to work your pelvic floor muscles, despite all the magazine articles you have read, do your body a favour and go and learn how to do them correctly. I can’t tell you how many women say to me daily: “I wish I did this years ago!” Check us out at www.womeninfocusphysio.com.au.
