This month I would like to introduce you to Maroubra grom Monty Tait. I’ve taken a few shots of him lately and I reckon he has a bright future ahead.

Name: Monty Tait
Age: 13
Local break: Maroubra
Board shaper and dimensions: Andrew Harris Surfboards – 5’6”, 17 ¼”, 2″

?Your favourite surf spot? When I was younger I used to go to Scotts Head a lot and that was my favourite wave for a while but then we went to Bali for the first time last year and surfed at Balian, which was awesome.

Have you been on many surf trips? Where to? When I was around the age of eleven we used to go up and down the coast to all the best spots like Bendalong, Green Island and places around Coffs Harbour. This year we mixed it up a little and went to Bali, which was great.

?When did you first stand up on a board? I first stood up on a board at the age of four but, as with all young groms, it was on a bodyboard.

?You compete in Southend Boardriders; how did you end up this year? This year was challenging. At the start of the year I missed out on a few of the comps because I was at a school where the school days were extremely long and I had compulsory sport on Saturdays, so I could only really surf on Sundays. In term two I moved to a school in Bondi and started surfing every morning and night and I started to get better results. I ended up getting two firsts, one third and one semi-final. Over all I came third.

?Have you entered any other comps? I have entered heaps of comps this year. The first one was the Southside Eliminations where I fortunately took out the Under 14’s. Then I had State and came equal fifth in the Under 14’s. Just recently I came third in the Kaihui Surf Comp at Newport in the Under 15’s and then I competed in the Jesus Pro Am at Cronulla and made it through to the semi-finals in the 16 and under division.

?Do you have any sponsors? AH Surfboards, Carve Eyewear, Future Fins and SIQ Wax.

?Who are your surfing inspirations? My inspirations are Mick Fanning, Kolohe Andino, Joel Parkinson and any grom that shreds.

Where would you like surfing to take you? I would like to take my surfing as far as it will allow me to go.

What do you want to do after school? I don’t know, maybe surf!

?Last words? Thanks to my family and friends for supporting me.
