Table Surfers at Bronte RSL

By Duncan Horscroft on August 19, 2011 in Sport

It’s no longer a case of “we will fight them on the beaches” for seven of the eastern beaches’ surfing clubs.

They are going to put their differences on the table at the Bronte RSL club in the Eastern Suburbs Boardriders Table Tennis Challenge.

Going into bat for bragging rights for their respective areas will be Bronte, South Maroubra, Maroubra, North and South Bondi, Tamarama Bodyboarders and the Bombie Crew.

“Yeah, we called it the Eastern Suburbs challenge just to give it to those bloody Rabbitohs supporters,” tournament organiser Sean Carroll snickered.

“The Roosters need all the help they can get at the moment and we thought we could give them a bit of a leg up.”

Sean also reckons they have access to a special “machine” provided by 13-time Australian table tennis champion Paul Pinkewich.

Some of the Bronte boys are taking the challenge seriously and have been spotted at the RSL at various times of the day, while a couple of spies from Maroubra have also been seen lurking under the pretence of sinking a few schooners.

All money raised from the tournament will go to the Sydney Children’s Hospital at Randwick and there is talk of a bigger and better event to take place at the RSL in November.

The action starts at the Bronte RSL at 2pm on Saturday, August 27, and hopefully there will be more pings than pongs.
