Video of the Week – Bondi Bioluminescence
Bioluminescence from Marco Rudek on Vimeo.
Unless you’ve been living under a rather large boulder, you would’ve heard about last week’s red algal bloom along our beaches, which was apparently caused by warm weather and currents of high nutrient waters.
What you may not know is that this red algae, known as Noctiluca scintillans or ‘sea sparkle’, fires up into a luminescent sparkle when disturbed.
This is obviously most noticeable at night, and last Wednesday, November 28, the algae put on an amazing and magical show in the breaking waves after the sun had set.
Nature at its best!
While some of you probably saw the show in action, i’m sure many of you would’ve missed it, but thankfully Marco Rudek had his camera on hand and he captured the spectacle in all its glory. Enjoy!
