Science Of The Surf Returns This Summer

By Sharon Simpkins on January 8, 2013 in News

As part of the 2013 Sydney Summerama program, Dr Robert Brander (a.k.a. Dr Rip) will once again be taking to the beaches to spread his vast knowledge of all things oceanic.

Dr Brander’s free, multiple award-winning Science of the Surf talks give an interesting insight into how our beaches work, from the journey of tiny little sand grains onto your favourite beach, to the massive swell that rolls in during big storms, and how to spot a deadly rip current – the talks are for anyone who loves and is interested in the beach.

Brander will be giving three Science of the Surf talks locally – one in Randwick (Maroubra SLSC, January 11, 11am-12noon), one in Woollahra (Woollahra Council Chambers, January 17, 12noon – 1:30pm) and one in Waverley (Tamarama SLSC, January 19, 10am-12noon) – and his advice for locals wanting to attend is simple.

“They always pack in a crowd so make sure to get there early!” he said.

Brander will also be giving a more in depth presentation at the Bronte Surf Club on January 17 from 6.30pm to 9pm.

“I’m giving a special talk at Bronte Surf Club about the risks facing our beaches and how we can manage them, and I’ll be debunking some myths along the way. If you have any interest in the future of your favourite beach, you should come along,” he added.
