2013 Trends To Laugh At or Love?

In a decade from now are we going to look back on 2013 and die of embarrassment when our kids check at our pictures and laugh?

It’ll be interesting to see what they think of the following:

The Beard – Literally every man has one, whether it’s a bit of fluff or the full-grown bush. Don’t get me wrong, I’m really into them (my husband has one), but I was also really into parachute pants and overalls once upon a time.

The Nerdy Gent – Surely guys will look back on photos of themselves in floppy bow ties and suspenders and wonder what they were thinking.

Silicone ‘Cause’ Bracelets – I’m pretty sure these will go down in history next to the Swatch watch.

Neon Ensembles – Worn by event staff, tradesmen on building sites… and the 2013 fashion set. Enough said.

Unnecessary Fashion Spectacles – Take it from someone who wore glasses to actually see (I thank God for laser surgery every day), these people are going to look back and wonder why they paid money for a fashion accessory that makes them look half blind.

Vintage Band T-shirts – We will definitely look back and wonder why people who have barely listened to the band in question’s songs are usually the ones wearing these.

I’m ready for 2014 and more interesting new fashion trends. In fact, I’ve already executed my New Year’s resolution: to rid my wardrobe of hardly-worn pieces (yes it was hard to part with them) for a fresh sartorial start to the year and to make space for new additions like my silvery-grey sequin party frock and striking blazer by Manning Cartell.

It’s easy to get into a style rut when your wardrobe is full to bursting. I find that mid-winter and mid-summer is when it can happen to me – when I’m too cold or too hot to show the care that I should and find myself hitting the repeat button. Yep, it happens to me too. When life gets busy anyone can be found reaching for the same items, day in, day out.

Give me an occasion to dress up for and I’m sorted, but on those mundane but hectic days involving school runs and after-school activities, my everyday style can become same-same when the easy option is hanging front and centre, winking at me. Thankfully my wardrobe clean out has fixed this. It feels great to put effort into looking stylish every day, for me rather than for an occasion.

On the street this month I found:

Name: Rachel
Occupation: Manager
Lives: Double Bay
Fave Item This Season: An M Missoni skirt
Street Style: Don’t you just love Rachel’s peacock print Mara Hoffman cut-out shirt dress from Eco D? She also rocks white Pantanetti booties, Maison Scotch jewellery and Tom Ford sunglasses.

Name: Emily
Occupation: Journalism student
Lives: Rose Bay
Fave Item This Season: A Sophie Moran heart jumper
Street Style: Emily looks effortlessly chic is a Lilya dress and sandals and Mariposa necklace, all from Eco D. She also wears a pair of bargain shades from Rubi.
