Letter Of The Month – A Thankyou Note

By Deborah Binder on April 27, 2011 in Other

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am a fan and regular reader of The Beast and I am writing to you as I would very much like to ask for your help regarding the below.

On Saturday, April 2, I had a surfing accident in Maroubra, which is where I have lived for the past three years. As I was catching a wave I nosedived and the wind blew up my board, making it fall with its back fin first cutting straight into my left thigh. The board came down with such strength that the fin went all the way into my leg, with the tip of the fin coming out again on the inside of my thigh.

Luckily, and although the wound was very deep, it did not affect any arteries, veins or nerves, although it did cut the entire muscle in half and I had to have two operations and will have to go through a long recovery process.

Although I have some experience surfing (I am originally from the Canary Islands, Spain), these things can happen to surfers of any level (remember Joel Parkinson’s heel cut last July?) and it becomes clear at these times how important the help and reaction from other surfers that may be in the water at the same time can be.

In my case I was very fortunate that a girl surfing in the water very close to me was able to reach me in no time and could take me to shore where the Maroubra lifeguards were waiting for me already. This girl did such an amazing job ‘saving’ me that I would like to thank her in person. Unfortunately, I do not know her and had never seen her before in Maroubra (I only know that she is originally from Buenos Aires) but I do hope she might read this thankyou note.

I would also like to thank the Maroubra lifeguards for their wonderful work and for taking care of the wound as true professionals they are. Thank you for making the beaches safer for everybody!
